I dont know for the visual yet.
1. "What do you guys know about SWAT?" (Maybe 30 seconds to a minute)
2. Inform them I'm going to tell a story about a former SWAT sniper that I know.
3. Ask if they understand what I'm going to do.
4. Tell following story.... but full version
-Van parked in McDonalds parking lot and pedestrians ask if driver is okay.
-Driver says "Get away I have a bomb"
-They call cops
-Cop says, "Hey whats going on?" driver responds, "Get away I'll kill everyone here, I have a bomb.
- Patrol calls for SWAT
- SWAT decides if the suspect or vehicle become mobile, people will possibly be bombed
- After hours of negotiations the driver gets irritated
-SWAT tells him if tries to dirve he will be shot
- Suspect turns on car and attepmts to drive
- Sniper makes split second decision, and shoots him twice, killing him immediately
- Van and suspect were not armed, niether was there a bomb
(this may take me 2-3 minutes)
5. Why do you think the sniper shot the man? (30 seconds)
6. The SWAT sniper made a split second decision to shoot, using a high tech weapon, ending the dangerous situation
7. Patrol was niether trained or equipped for such a situation
8. SWAT makes life or death decisions every day, that are highly controversil to people
10. It takes a unique and mentally tough person to be a member of SWAT
11. "Any questions?"
12. "Any complaints?"
Very complete...check for understanding should be at end about what you've taught..."how does SWAT differ from ordinary patrol?" The story is really disturbing...do you have a story where people really would have died if the sniper hadn't acted quickly? All I could think was, "I bet that man was mentally ill! Wasn't there some other way to verify that he was lying?"
